Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Debra Wyatte, Founder and President of WE Consulting LLC., located in Boulder, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

WE Consulting focuses on placemaking for the best community experience by connecting people and places in real estate.

Tell us about yourself

Early in my career, I worked for an HOA management company as a lifestyle director for a master-planned community in Colorado. Fast forward, I have worked with over one hundred Master Planned Communities across the country, assisting community developers, production home builders, and Homeowner Associations in creating a sense of place. My goal every day is to facilitate a memorable customer journey for everyone that engages in the new home-buying process.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment thus far has been the relationships I have established over her career. These relationships landed my first clients with no traditional marketing, company name, logo, etc.! That's when I realized the power of my reputation in the industry could afford me to launch my own business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Making time for the things you don't enjoy doing. For me, it's accounting. I'd much rather be engaging and interacting we people vs. playing in a spreadsheet.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Invest in yourself and create a personal brand statement. This will help you better understand what drives you. If your business doesn't align with what drives you, it will still feel like a "job" more days than not.
  2. How you interact and treat people today is crucial in the long run, especially if your new business is in the same industry. Start building and putting your personal brand to work long before you leap into starting your own business.
  3. Seek out others that have already done it and ideally in the same industry. They will be a wealth of knowledge for you more so than any blog or book you read.
