Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Moon, Founder of DC Vegan, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We own DC Vegan - a full-service catering company, deli, and botanical bar. Our customers are 25-55, skew female, live and work in the DMV, and value sustainability, beautiful spaces, and great food and drinks.

Tell us about yourself

My partner Leah (also my wife!) and I started DC Vegan in 2015. We were both unhappy at our jobs at the time and decided we’d had enough. The social justice component of our business makes it easy to go to work. We love what we do, and we love that what we do has a positive impact on our customer's health - animals and the environment too!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment so far has been scaling during the pandemic. We moved into a 5000s/f building blocks from the White House and opened a delicatessen and the first vegan bar in DC!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner has its challenges like anything else. It’s hard at times. You need to be scrappy. You need to fight. You need to not give up. Because anything “worth” doing is going to be hard. And that’s ok.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be flexible.
  2. Take the information you are given and listen!
  3. Don’t be afraid of change.
