Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dawn Thalheimer, Owner of Blacktop Fitness & Nutriton Coaching, located in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a nutrition coach who helps busy women feel confident and #FitTheirPants without intimidating workouts or restrictive diets.

Tell us about yourself

As a business owner and mom of five, I'm obsessed with making healthy lifestyles attainable for busy women. My number one focus is to help my clients find the time and energy to make the changes they know will lead to a healthier, happier version of themselves.

I've been a certified personal trainer for almost ten years, so transitioning into nutrition coaching allowed me to offer the missing piece to the puzzle that stalls so many people from making progress. I'm super passionate about undoing a lot of the messaging that is out there offering "magical solutions" to people who are struggling. I design custom programs for my clients that fit THEIR lives, not their friend's, mothers', or some Instagram influencers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to serve my people!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Not working all hours of the day. Taking time off on evenings and weekends for family. Creating work/life balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a business coach. It may seem like a big investment upfront, but it will save you SO much time, energy, and effort spent heading in the wrong direction.
  2. Don't be the cheap guy. Resist the urge to be less expensive than alternative products and services. You'll never win at this game, and it won't help you grow your business.
  3. Get out there and meet people. Join a networking group. Tell people what you do and how you or your product can help them. Offer this freely and without expectation. The person you meet is not likely your client, but I bet they have a friend who is.
