Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David DeLorenzo, owner and CEO of Bar and Restaurant Insurance, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the business of Connecting and Protecting. Twenty years of running a niche insurance agency to help hospitality owners from the perils of what can happen when running their business. Serving alcohol, having employees, fires, slip, and falls there are all things that my customers have to think about on a daily basis. This is why they hire me. To help protect them and also give them the best insights I can to avoid these issues before they happen. We are local, and we have a great staff that people get to know. We love to help.

Tell us about yourself

I am a native AZ kid. Grew up loving music and worked in the music business for Warner Bros records. Insurance was part of the family business that I never thought I would get into, but I did. I then made it my own and aligned it with my passion for doing it with fun people in an industry of entertainment that I already love. People motivate me. The ability to talk to people, hear their stories, and help them. I am an already motivated person in life. Love to work out, eat right, and go after it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Sticking to a niche and continuously educating myself and my staff in it without getting burned out. Finding great people to work with me and making sure we all take care of each other and our clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Dealing with all the nuances of having to pay bills, dealing with staff personal issues, and learning to grow in a productive way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Live your passion. Period.
  2. Always take the meeting. Get to know everyone you can. You never know who can be a part of your life and help you.
  3. Make sure you take time out for yourself, so you don't burn out before you even get to enjoy the fire.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Due to running a great business for 20 years and helping many people, I am getting into speaking to share my story with others. Coaching to help individuals that need it on a one-on-one level. www.iamthedelo.com is that site. My nickname is "DELO."
