Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental health care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dave Shields, co-owner of Kenosis Counseling & Life Coaching Center, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I started Kenosis Counseling and Life Coaching out of my home office in 1998 while I was a stay-at-home dad. Since that time, Kenosis has grown to 3 offices and 14 counselors. We primarily serve Greenwood and nearby cities. Those who become clients at Kenosis often need help with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and kid challenges like ADHD, giftedness, and overall behavioral issues. At Kenosis, you will experience a safe, empathetic, and helpful environment in your search for help. The counselors at Kenosis are down-to-earth, relatable, highly trained, and skilled at helping you achieve an extraordinary life.

Tell us about yourself

People came to me for advice as early as high school. By the time I was a sophomore in college, I knew I wanted to start my counseling practice. My journey of self-exploration and personal growth is one of my most significant assets in helping others. I walk my talk and have had my share of adversity in life. I defined my mission in life in 1992: to help others heal and claim extraordinary lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There was a time when I was out of practice due to a chronic medical condition. When I recovered and returned, three previous clients sought me out in the first three months to tell me how much they appreciated my help. One had been in counseling with me 20 years prior, another 15 years prior, and the last was with me 12 years before my absence. This was an excellent confirmation of what I do and my desire to help others heal.

I've always known that I want to touch as many lives as possible while on Earth. To that end, I've expanded Kenosis to 3 offices, and we're now up to 14 counselors. Kenosis has impacted over 5000 lives since I began the practice.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Owning a small business comes with wearing many hats. Some of those hats fit nicely and are comfortable to wear, while others do not fit well. The hardest thing about being a business owner is juggling all of the responsibilities, finding a system of organization that works, and implementing strategies efficiently.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Having an excellent vision is not enough. Starting and growing a business is not easy work. You might see the attainment of your picture up on high, but you must be willing to take all the steps to reach that ultimate goal. You'll suffer setbacks and failures along the way. Perseverance, discipline, and passion are essential in accomplishing your dream.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

At first, you may have to do it all, but as you move along, it will be essential to learn how to bring on people who are good at what you are not. Trusting and letting go so that others can work to their strengths will allow you to focus on where your passions are and keep you energized for what's to come.
