What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dapper Doggies CO is a mobile grooming company based in Douglas County, Colorado. Our customers are local pet owners. In Colorado, that means everyone!

Tell us about yourself

I used to take my pups to a big box store for grooming. It was always a high-anxiety and day-long event. Really stressful. Once we switched to using a mobile groomer, there was no question that we would never go back to an in-store experience for them. The trouble was - it was hard to find a mobile grooming company that was dependable or communicative. So, I invested in a truck and hired a groomer. The model worked well, so I continued to grow my business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have always operated under the philosophy that you should take care of the people that take care of you. So, even as a small (but growing) business, we offer our employees paid holidays, Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits at no cost to them, along with a 401k.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Managing people is always a struggle, so go with your gut when it comes to hiring but expect that sometimes things don't work out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't beat yourself up - mistakes are going to happen - learn and move on.
  2. It is really easy to make a customer happy by listening attentively and having integrity.
  3. Email is king. If you pay for leads, make sure you get to keep them.
