Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dante Perozzi, Founder of Dante Perozzi Jewelry, located in Lakewood, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Dante Perozzi Jewelry, and my customers are those who indulge in originality and appreciate wearing items with a story to tell. They understand the power of art and enjoy expressing themselves through their clothing and jewelry. They're people who understand that quality trumps quantity; they're not looking to be dressed like everyone else. These are individuals who are conscious of sustainability when it comes to fashion – whether that means shopping locally or choosing pieces created using ethical methods.

Tell us about yourself

Before I did what I am doing now, I was a sculptor. I sought out a jewelry-making course with the intention of adding the skillset of metals to my tool belt. But the moment I discovered how to work with metals developed an affinity for jewelry making. It allowed me to replicate the forms and aesthetics that I had always been inclined towards in my large sculptural works - but still maintain a sense of relatability, usefulness, and accessibility. Around the time my oldest child was born, I decided to make it into a career. Now I craft small wearable sculptures! As somebody who comes from a sculpting background as opposed to fashion design, this has enabled me to bring something entirely unique when it comes down to developing jewelry designs, and the joy I take from doing this work brings me back day after day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That there are people out in the world who enjoy wearing my work and that it's out there every day, making someone feel inspired and empowered.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's incredibly hard to be a solopreneur and have to rely on oneself alone for all the things that need doing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Finding a few other business owners to dialogue with and seek feedback from is absolutely vital.
  2. Collect emails! If you leave an event with a sign-up sheet filled with emails from interested clients, then the event was a success. Building your email list should be a top priority...then use it to help you grow.
  3. Know your brand values and why anyone should care.
