Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Danielle Hamlin, founder of Danielle Hamlin Fitness, located in Plano, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Danielle Hamlin, and I am a personal trainer based out of Plano, TX, who helps clients achieve their physical goals while alleviating pain due to muscle imbalances. Taking a myological approach to fitness, I specialize in corrective exercise and exercise execution (form) to best suit my client's anatomical profile, goals, needs, and physical limitations. It's not enough to focus on arbitrary movements. There are thousands of ways to perform an exercise incorrectly, but there is only one correct way to perform an exercise according to YOUR body. The key is to work with your body to maximize results and restore balance to joints. Work smarter so you can train harder and achieve the body you have always dreamed of, pain-free and fit!

Tell us about yourself

Having my own business has been a long time in the making. After graduating from college with a bachelor's in psychology, I realized that I was far more into fitness. I was (and still am) obsessed with the way the human body functions, moves, heals and adapts. This realization inspired me to get my personal training certification and learn all that I could. I became a sponge, soaking up everything relative to the human body. I ended up doing very well and became the number one personal trainer at the number one gym in the entire nation within my corporation. After riding the corporate gym scene out for a bit, I decided that the next logical step in my career was to take my expertise independently. So, I did! The same thing that motivated me then still motivates me today. The human body is amazing! It is truly rewarding, inspiring, and motivating to know so much about the human body that I can shake some of the misconceptions people have about their bodies and help them get into the body of their dreams.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being a relatively new business, my biggest accomplishment so far has been being able to quit my corporate gym job to be completely on my own. It is an empowering feeling knowing that you are completely in control of how you can make a living and that you can do so doing the thing you love.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the mental ups and downs that come with the fear of failing or everything falling apart are the hardest thing about being a business owner. Sometimes it feels like I can give myself mental whiplash. One day I can be on cloud nine after having a wonderful session or signing up a new client, and the next day my mind is trying to give me all of the worst-case scenarios that could tank my business and therefore need to be addressed all at once right now. "Sheesh, brain! Calm down." If this sounds like you, just remember that it's because you're growing into a new you. The inner critique views change as a threat because it's new and unfamiliar. To the inner critique, familiarity equals safety, and it will attempt to keep you safe and convince you to play safe always. Don't listen to that guy. Grow!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't let fear into your decision-making room. Fear can be crippling, don't let it cloud decisions. Know what it is that you want in life and get after it without hesitation!
  2. Go the extra mile to take care of legalities. Hire a third party to take care of legalities and explain them to you. You don't want any surprises in the future that cost you peace so lay the foundation with a strong legal backbone.
  3. Serve your community. If you're trying to take over the world, the world can seem big and become intimidating. If you set out to take care of the community around you, they'll spread the word, and you will conquer the world in the long run.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
