Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kerry Kapaku, Founder of DanceWorks Indy, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We offer dance and fitness classes to adults of all ages and abilities in a wide range of styles, including ballet, tap, hip hop, jazz, contemporary, yoga, dance fitness, and more!

Tell us about yourself

I created DanceWorks Indy because I saw a great need in our city for adult dance classes. I believe dance should be accessible and enjoyable at any age, and I firmly believe that all adults should feel encouraged and supported on their dance journey, whether they're just starting out or have been dancing their whole lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We opened our doors six months before the COVID-19 pandemic began. My biggest accomplishment is that our business (that depends on people being in the same room together doing physical activity) has managed to survive - we are turning three this year!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it's been letting go of the idea of perfection. This is something I'm still working on, but I believe that doing so will open up more growth possibilities for both the business and myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify the need that you're going to fill, and figure out how you're going to fill that need differently or better than anyone else on the market.
  2. Always keep your head on the swivel - curve balls are going to come at you from all sides, and you need to be ready to pivot, learn, and grow at a moment's notice.
  3. Remind yourself that everyone in your shoes is just figuring it out as they go, no matter how thorough of a plan they had going in. You're not alone, and you're probably doing better than you think.
