Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Veronica Diebold Pointon, Assistant Creative Director of Dance About, located in Traverse City, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dance About is a pre-recorded video dance program that teaches basic dance techniques, creative movement, and musicality to students aged 3 and up. This enjoyable, interactive introduction to a beginning fine arts education is a 16-week series of videos that are 20 to 30 minutes in length and can be done once a week or every day – at home or on the run! The program comes with a prop bag to further the experience and aids in the tactile exploration of the skills introduced. Our fun, vibrant and energetic classes help develop foundational movement skills and aid in brain development. Dance About is designed for the parent who finds it hard to fit an in-person dance class into their family’s already busy schedule or wants something the whole gang can discover and experience at home together! It’s perfect for physical education or refreshing your child’s body and mind with a brain break during the day for home and pod schools. The next time your child says they are bored, get them up, moving, and grooving with a stimulating Dance About video!

Tell us about yourself

Dance About is a project that came out of our home dance studio, The Dance Studio, in Charlotte, MI. The Dance Studio is our family-owned business, and we have been doing this for over 20 years. I love being creative and working together along with my family members! While we have taught dance and worked together for a long time, Dance About is our new program that we developed when our brick-and-mortar studio had to close for several weeks due to the pandemic. A project like Dance About is something that we have always wanted to do, and utilizing the talents of my family made it so enjoyable and fun. Creating something we know other families will love and grow from is rewarding. We motivate each other every day to do and be our best!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

With the addition of the Dance About video program to our brick-and-mortar in-person studio experience, we are now able to serve the community with a much broader reach. Movement is such an important part of a child’s development. It is rewarding to be able to impact their lives in a positive and affirming way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing business and personal life is always a challenge!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Never stop learning! Be authentic – there is only one you! Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
