What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a board-certified reconstructive foot and ankle surgeon specializing in peripheral nerve injuries and diabetic limb salvage.
Tell us about yourself
Studying science in college at The University of Notre Dame, I had the opportunity to look at going to medical school. I researched allopathic and podiatric medicine pathways. I wanted to get into sports medicine and surgery, and podiatric medicine and surgery appeared to offer that mix. Ultimately, working with athletes (and their parents) did not appeal to me, so adult reconstruction became my subspecialty. Along the way, I filled a niche in my area in North Texas by developing several wound care and hyperbaric programs at local hospitals and, along with this, became board certified in wound management. I was dissatisfied with the options for treating painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy and sought additional training in peripheral nerve surgery. This had a profound impact on my practice, and after 2003 my practice evolved into 75% peripheral nerve and 25% adult reconstruction and diabetic limb salvage.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Surviving COVID with my practice intact! The last three years have been by far the hardest three years in my 24 years in private practice from a business perspective.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Human resources are difficult, and with ten employees, things were often very difficult during COVID to keep our team intact.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Don't try to do it all by yourself. I'm a fairly hands-off employer. I focus on hiring good people, training them, and letting them do their jobs.
