Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erik Dalton, Founder of Dalton Myoskeletal, located in Oklahoma City, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide continuing education for massage therapists and other manual therapists. We teach a unique brain-based bodywork system called Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, which is designed to help people have pain-free lives.

Tell us about yourself

I got my PhD in psychology, but an accident led me to massage and bodywork. I ended up studying with Dr. Ida Rolf and was fascinated by her ability to change people's bodies and help resolve their pain issues. This led me to a lifelong exploration of bodywork and manual therapy. The work I do has evolved as research uncovers the mechanisms behind pain. Rather than being purely a mechanical process of massaging painful areas, I have incorporated this new understanding of the body to create techniques that change the body through its influence on the nervous system.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've helped so many people live happy, pain-free lives, not just through my own practice but by training thousands of massage therapists and manual therapists to incorporate these powerful techniques into their own massage practices.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's difficult to wear so many hats and challenging to fulfill all the roles required to run a successful business: a creator, entrepreneur, and manager.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You can't do it alone. Put together a team to help you, especially in areas of weakness.
  2. Invest in your business. You need to put time and money into producing a quality product and marketing that product.
  3. Focus on innovation. Always be evolving so you can help your customers in new or more effective ways.
