Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amber Burr, Co-Owner of Daddy’s Homemade, located in Evergreen, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We produce all-natural homemade syrup in unique flavors and pancake mix. Our customers started as families who enjoyed pancakes, waffles, and French toast and were looking for a healthier alternative free of artificial ingredients, high fructose corn syrup, and preservatives.

Now, we have found our unique flavors are good for so much more! Not just for breakfast foods anymore, we use them in coffee and beverages, desserts, meats, popcorn, and salty snacks,… used as a tasty topper to just about anything. We have something for everyone!

Tell us about yourself

After having some health issues, my husband, Dannie (AKA daddy), took a closer look at the ingredients in the syrup we bought from the store and realized how much high fructose corn syrup was in it. He decided he could make something healthier for our kids and the family.

Having a business degree and owned my own business before, I was excited to support him and let my entrepreneurial side come out. My kids and family are my biggest motivator in doing what I do daily.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Despite starting our business right before the pandemic, we received a new business of the year and a home-based business of the year with our local chambers. We are looking to expand out of the cottage foods industry and have our own commercial kitchen in the future.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I was trying to juggle everything and find time to do it all while spending time with family and making time for myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Consistency!
  2. Believe in yourself and what you do!
  3. Don’t give up!
“No matter how much falls on us, we keep plowing ahead. That’s the only way to keep the roads clear.”
    ― Greg Kincaid
“Do not judge me by my success. Judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”
    ― Nelson Mandela
“I tried and failed. I tried again and again and succeeded.”
    ― Gail Borden
“The difference between a strong man and a weak one is that the former does not give up after a defeat.”
    ― Woodrow Wilson

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Our oldest daughter’s drawings were the inspiration behind our labels and were created by her by hand when we first started.

We love working in our community and helping where we can. Sometimes you can find our products at local charities' silent auctions, sponsoring schools and other nonprofits, or find us organizing food drives at events for local food banks.

From our family to yours, we inspire the joy of creating kitchen memories through food, family, and fun by producing high-quality, all-natural homemade syrups and ready-to-blend breakfasts while supporting sustainable packaging.
