What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am working in visual effects for movies and game cinematics. I am providing studios with High-end quality 3d environments that are used in 'shots.' Mu customers range from big movie studios to independent game developers. I recently delivered works for the Netflix Love death and Robots tv show.
Tell us about yourself
I always drew and painted environments; the earth has some very magical places. So for me, it was normal to end up working and studying the 3D arts. I started long ago as a self-taught and joined a school in France, Strasbourg. After that, I worked as an employee for a few years, but I always felt it wasn't really for me.
That's when I decided to freelance, and it was the most exciting, scary, and rewarding decision in my life; I recommend people give it a try! I am very fortunate to do what I love every day. Making art and getting paid for it, what more to ask? Every project is different and keeps me motivated always to deliver the best I can; I can work for advertising on some dental 3d implants and the next day work on a Marvel movie.
Now that I accumulated lots of clients, I created my own business D&P Creative Group LTD, which is the same as my freelance but more extensive. I now provide online teaching through free and paid courses and also work on big projects on the side. I have the capacity to hire people when needed to help me accomplish big tasks.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Trust me more, and not be that scared of launching a business. If you fail, it's just a lesson to do better next time. Actually, I don't think there are failures, only if you're stuck with them. So learning how to manage a business, deal with the client, and do what I love and want, is the best thing that happened to me. This freedom is priceless!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Like other business owners mentioned, the inconsistency in the salary. But what is the hardest is, no matter if you're making more money as a business owner. Banks and other institutions are never really helping you. They prefer someone employee with a more stable income even if it's less, which is a bit backward in my opinion.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just do it, and don't be scared; you might be missing some great opportunity!
- Be curious and go to a seminar; you'll learn a lot about how to be a good leader.
- Don't be shy to promote yourself.
