Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dawn Boyer, CEO of D. Boyer Consulting, located in Gloucester, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a few services:

  • Resume rewriting for job seekers.
  • Editing content for business owners, authors, bloggers, and writers.
  • Publishing books for authors - ranging between essays, poems, and religious writings to dissertations converted to commercial books and textbooks.
  • Publishing my own books - ranging from business-topic textbooks to genealogy lineage reports.

Tell us about yourself

I graduated with my Ph.D. and decided I wasn't really inspired to teach at university. I had 25 years of human resources experience under my belt, and folks were begging me to help them with their resumes. I decided to branch off into my current business as a result.

I love being able to work from home, helping others get into new careers, as well as helping authors see their books published on Amazon and the global market.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To date, I have assisted over 70 authors in obtaining published status. For my resume writing, I have rewritten over 14,000 resumes for clients (as well as rewritten resumes for a previous business role). I am pretty sure I have reached the Subject Matter Expert status for both types of work.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

When a client starts telling me what they want me to do instead of listening to my years of experience in doing things a specific way for the best Return on Investment (ROI), what is funny - about 98% of the ones telling me what to do often reverse their "push" and end up doing what I advise them to do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research while you keep your current job.
  2. Don't feel you have to spend a lot of money to start up your new business venture beg, borrow, or ask for advice from knowledgeable folks don't feel you have to buy all new clothes, a new car, or have a fancy office to perform the work or services for your clients - do with what you have now and work your way up to buying new tools, products, or office/business environment once you have the revenue.
  3. The Small Business Administration and its non-profit offshoot, SCORE (Senior Corps of Retired Executives), which can provide FREE mentoring, advice, and guidance to budding entrepreneurs and is available in most large metropolitan areas, as well as by phone and email, are your most valuable resources or assets.
