Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cynthia Corsetti, Founder of Cynthia Corsetti Coaching, LLC, located in Sewickley, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an executive leadership coach, and I specialize in C-Suite Executive Coaching. My business also has coaches who do the levels below the C-Suite, including directors and managers. Our clients are either individual executives who choose to accelerate their career growth by investing in their own enhanced leadership development or organizations who have teams of leaders who need solid leadership skills and protocols that can be easily incorporated into their day-to-day jobs.

Tell us about yourself

I've loved organizational leadership for years and completed my master's in just that. I worked as a senior HR executive, and when I left that role (because I got married and wanted more flexibility in my life), it was natural for me to begin coaching. I've never regretted the decision at all. At first, it felt scary to give up such a lucrative salary and comp package to go out on my own, but I've more than made up the income, and I've had the freedom to do it my own way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think it's a toss-up between the results my clients get from the coaching; they had done amazing things that they never imagined doing before we worked together and scaled the business to the point where I now have a team, and we can coach entire organizations instead of just one individual at a time.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Downtime. Especially when you actually LOVE everything about your business. It becomes a part of who you are. However, if you aren't careful, it consumes the other parts of who you are. Like a mother, a wife, a daughter, or a friend. Sometimes I reflect and realize that I haven't taken even one day off in months. Even when I travel with my husband, part of each day involves work, not because I have to, but because I love it so much. I'm starting to make conscious decisions to change that about myself though. Like, I always enjoyed reading, and since starting my business, I've read thousands of books on leadership literally. But I missed reading novels and books on other topics. I had to force myself to do it by starting a book club. We now have about 16 people in the club, and we've read some amazing books. I am so glad I made the decision to at least give myself that gift of time. My goal for 2023 is to dedicate more time to personal things, friendships and relationships. The business will be fine, and honestly, when I can take down time, I am a better coach for my clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know that your biggest successes will come directly from failing. In other words, take risks, make mistakes and learn from them.
  2. Scale, but do it in a way that is manageable. Getting too big too fast can sabotage your long-term plans.
  3. Get a coach. I mean that. I have a coach, and I have had coaches for years. Without them, I wouldn't be where I am today.
