What's your business, and who are your customers?

CyberBennett is a cybersecurity awareness company that is devoted to educating, inspiring, and supporting various audiences. This has been accomplished through a few projects and endeavors—for instance, speaking engagements, blog series, and a course with LinkedIn. CyberTeens, my subsidiary brand, focuses on the youth. Primarily using: Short videos, puzzles, a book, and speaking engagements. Saleen, the CyberTeen is my cybersecurity introduction book that explains complicated terminology using poetry. It features a young black woman to encourage diversity and display representation.

Tell us about yourself

What got me started was a few things. The primary motive was the lack of cybersecurity minorities speaking to students about their journey. Next, I was able to spread cybersecurity awareness using my young age as I have a great understanding of the current landscape and its influences. Lastly, generating another source of income.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is having a course with LinkedIn. This demonstrates my knowledge as I'm able to gain visibility from a social media giant's audience.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is everything depends on your ability to manage time efficiently. This becomes increasingly difficult as you take on more responsibilities for professional, parental, or personal reasons.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it. Getting started isn't difficult. For example, getting an EIN is the easiest step and can help you as you further develop your business.
  2. Trust the process and do the work. On average, it takes 3-5 years before small businesses thrive.
  3. Determine your target audience and develop an ideal target customer. It'll help you have an idea of how to prioritize all your efforts.
