Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Levin, President of Custom Solutions Inc., located in Danville, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I deliver keynotes and workshops on my Entrepreneurial Leadership and Collaborative Sales Philosophies.

Tell us about yourself

I enjoy getting to share what I've learned in the hope of helping others. I've been fortunate to have a broad background with the number of businesses I've launched, the companies I've consulted for, and running divisions for a Fortune 100 to have learned a lot, many times the hard way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Turning two businesses around in the midst of the mid-2000 recession and building them into highly successful businesses that we were able to sell.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is no guaranteed paycheck. It's up to you. As I told a friend who had gotten involved with his own business, you can complain but understand there's no paycheck coming. When you're on your own, you've got to get things fixed and back on the right track.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Follow your passion. If it's something you enjoy, it won't feel like work.
  2. Make the commitment. Most people I know are only motivated by the guaranteed paycheck and the knowledge if they don't do their job, they could lose that paycheck. Very few have enough motivation and self-discipline to block out the time and make an effort to launch their own business.
  3. Put together a budget that includes success and failure. Not everything will go smoothly. Chances are there is some kind of innovation in whatever you are doing. Make sure you have budgeted for changes in direction and do-overs, so you aren't undercapitalized.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be patient and persevere. It's not easy. But frequently, it's worth it.
