Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alysha M. Campbell, Owner of CultureShift HR, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is CultureShift HR, which is an HR and DEI consultancy agency working with start-ups and small businesses that want to make their workplaces more inclusive.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the HR and DEI space for over ten years, and it's funny I never went to school for HR or DEI and didn't imagine my career taking me here. The reason I get up and do what I do every single day is that we spend so much time of our lives at work, benefiting other interests and bottom lines, that we as employees should have the right to feel safe, challenged, and valued at a minimum and have a workplace culture where we feel like everyone, no matter what background, can belong and feel themselves authentically.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To date, as a business owner, my biggest accomplishments are two things. First is being able to grow my team. I've been a solopreneur for the first 3.5 years of my business, and now being at a stage where I can sustain and grow employees is really significant for me. It means that what we are doing is working and that we are meeting a need in the market, which is really exciting.

The second biggest is winning Mogul's TOP DEI professional for 2021 and IAOTP's Top DEI Professional for 2022. The fact that our work is being recognized in the market is really exciting, and it encourages me to create and want to provide more services to ensure the work continues to grow and make an impact.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest thing is trusting myself. There are a million and one ways to do something nowadays, and to trust that you are making the best decisions for your business, your team, and ultimately the future of your work puts a lot of pressure on the decision you make every day. I work hard to evaluate and be focused on reviewing my decisions just enough that I am comfortable but also knowing that I am not afraid to take certain risks that will help to drive the business forward.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be in this for the long run. Depending on your product or service, a business is not a short-term project you start and just leave. Be ready for the journey of peaks and valleys and ensure you have the support system you need in place, colleagues, family, finances, etc., to help you in the valleys and to celebrate in the peaks.
  2. Don't be afraid to try new things. How you envision your business coming to life or growing can change and have different versions of it, allowing it to become the ultimate success you want it to be. Sometimes we need to try how we deliver our product or services in different mediums to ensure we are reaching our audience in the most authentic and real way possible while having the biggest impact.
  3. Remember, you are one of a kind. Yes, there can be other similar products, business offerings, or influencers like you, but at the end of the day, no one is you, which is your superpower. Own it, use it for good, and the rest will fall into place.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There are a few people in the world that believe in themselves enough to venture into business, and those individuals are the ones that see the status quo and say, " I want to change this" that is truly powerful. If this is something you want to do, plan it out, invest in your ideas, and take the risks that allow you to be the change you want to see in the world.
