Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Theresa Fesinstine, Founder of Culture Markers, located in Norwalk, CT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the founder of Culture Markers, a research and business culture consultancy located in the NY/CT/NJ area.
Tell us about yourself
I've been in the Workplace Culture space for over 20 years, and recently (July) started my own firm. I have had the opportunity to see organizational culture and workplace experience in a variety of businesses and believe that while every company desires a "great culture," there is little available to guide those organizations to take steps to instill it across their business. The research component of Culture Markers is a mission I have to define company culture and create simple-to-use frameworks and reinforcement tools to support companies in achieving and sustaining great culture. As a consultant, I work with organizations CEO's and CHRO's to provide coaching and mentorship in the area of HR / People & Cultural development.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Cultivating my first client win over the past three months. The process of finding, connecting, and building trust with a new client was so rewarding, and it validates my decision to build Culture Markers.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Resisting the comfort of finding another company to join. Confidence in myself and in what Culture Markers will become, and resisting the insecurity of being out on my own.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Give yourself enough time (if possible) to build a plan while you are still making money.
- Lean on those in your circle that are cheerleaders when things/you are feeling uncertain.
- Develop your networking and selling skills.
