Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jill Paradis, Founder of Culinary Translations, located in Avon, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Culinary Translations provides food safety training in Spanish and teaches ESL (English as a second language) to restaurant kitchen staff.

Tell us about yourself

I started Culinary Translations in 2004 after working as a nutrition educator, speaking with the program attendees in Spanish, and realizing that basic food safety information was not readily available. The majority of our restaurant workers in Colorado are Spanish speaking and weren't getting the proper training to ensure safe food. ESL training is a way to bridge the language gap and provides employees with a life skill that fosters personal growth in and out of the kitchen

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing alongside with technology is certainly an accomplishment; I started out with a TV/VCR combo and my training materials that I would load in my Subaru and drive all over the mountains and front range, and now it is all done virtually.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is the uncertainty. I was in my early 20s when I started Culinary Translations, and I am not sure I would have been so courageous later in life!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Have passion for what you do, and believe in it. Find learning opportunities and educate yourself with all the great online learning resources. The public library is such an asset.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

A good summertime food safety tip is to make sure to wash a watermelon before slicing into it. Soil harbors pathogens, which can transfer from the knife to the fruit.
