Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bill Grundler, Owner of CrossFit Inferno, located in San Luis Obispo, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner and founder of CrossFit Inferno. Our members are all folks from 12-68 years old looking to improve their health and fitness.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a lifelong athlete and coach for three decades. I was the fitness coordinator for CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo County Fire Department (I'm a retired CAL FIRE Capt.). I started INFERNO as an online physical fitness program for firefighters, then decided to start an actual gym with my engineer and firefighter. Opened the gym in 2008. I have been in the CrossFit space as an athlete, Masters Games Athlete (2nd place in the world in 2015), Color Commentator for CrossFit events and the Games since 2010, Remote coach for athletes since 2016 for athletes all over the world, co-host on one of the biggest CrossFit podcasts Get With the Programming. I LOVE. To coach and help people do things they NEVER thought they could ever do. Whether it's losing a few pounds or being able to feel better, being able to compete, accomplishing particular goals, building people's self-confidence, or battling depression and making their overall life better due to their fitness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to pivot through the pandemic and staying open and alive for our members to keep thriving during the weirdest time in current history.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Not burying yourself. Being an entrepreneur doesn't have start and finishing times like a 9-5 job. The balance between authenticity (your way) and delegating things can be rough.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about what you will be doing.
  2. Get and have business mentors from the start.
  3. Stay true to your vision.
