Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Tafaro, Co-Owner of CrossFit Bison, located in Midland Park, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a CrossFit gym that caters to everyone over 14 years old that wants to improve their fitness and overall quality of life. Our customers range from professional athletes to people who have never worked out a day in their life.

Tell us about yourself

I worked as a Futures trader for 13 years prior to Bison. During my time as a trader, I explored many other fields, mostly ones that helped other people. When I discovered CrossFit, I knew that was the answer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hosting the 23.2 CrossFit Open announcement was a nice accolade, but being a part of the day-to-day operation of a large CrossFit gym that brings so many people fulfillment is the greatest accomplishment and continues to be.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management. My partner and I are very involved with the members. Balancing work and family is the hardest thing for me. Our hours don't end when the gym is closed. When to reply to texts at 10 pm or Sunday afternoon without offending your members or your family is a hard balance to figure out. We've made it this far, though.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a budget before you start! You'd be surprised at how many people want to start a business and have no idea what it takes to break even.
  2. Get a partner or someone to handle the things you are not good at.
  3. If you're in it just for the money and not something you love, you're in trouble… unless you have a lot of money already.
