Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jill Gockel, Founder of Create It, LLC., located in Maryville, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help small business owners & entrepreneurs plug into a simple system to make their bookkeeping easy enough to get it done in 5 minutes (even if they know nothing about accounting).

Tell us about yourself

As a new mother, I found that working at a job was no longer fulfilling since it took me away from my kids. So I decided to become an entrepreneur and start an online business. During this pursuit, I avoided bookkeeping and tracking my income/expenses like the plague because I wasn't good with finances. Unfortunately, this backfired on me every tax season when I had to spend weeks sifting through an entire year of transactions to prepare for my CPA. It was a nightmare. Eventually, I figured out a system that was super easy and took all the work out of bookkeeping. I was able to keep up with my bookkeeping, and tax season became a breeze! It became my mission to help other entrepreneurs conquer the stress & burden of bookkeeping so they could flourish as business owners.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, my biggest accomplishment is every single success story that my clients experience when they go through my 5 Minute Bookkeeping program. When someone comes to me feeling helpless, stressed out, and overwhelmed, they are unsure of their ability to do the necessary task of bookkeeping. But then, when they reach back out raving about how they caught up on an entire year (or two!) of bookkeeping, it is a joy to celebrate with them and the best part of my business!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest things that come with being a business owner are self-doubt and perseverance. When you have a job, you simply show up and receive a paycheck. But as a business owner, you typically don't receive the instant gratification of immediate sales (at least not in the amount that you're used to with a paycheck). It's easy to start believing that you're failing when you don't see instant success. It takes a continual amount of self-coaching to keep your mind focused on progress over immediate results and to persevere until you reach your desired level of success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take FAST action! If you are focused on taking action and always doing the next step, your mind will stay focused on your roadmap to success rather than looking around for signs of success or failure.
  2. Spend your time on money-making activities. It's easy to get distracted by things like creating a logo, picking out your brand colors, designing catchy business cards, etc., but those activities don't equate to sales. Focus on your product and sales; all other tasks can be outsourced to someone other than you.
  3. Plug into personal development and mindset coaching! You MUST keep your mind in the right place to avoid falling into the pit of self-doubt. There are tons of personal development resources out there; find one that inspires/motivates you and plug it in! It will be the best investment of your time and money and will ALWAYS yield a return on your investment!
