Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacob Schroeder, Owner of Crafted Food Services, located in Des Moines, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Crafted Food Services, which offers a range of services, including a private chef, small-scale catering, cooking lessons, pop-up events, collaboration events as well as professional consultation. My business's most important is supporting local businesses such as farmers, food purveyors, craftspeople, and artisans.

Tell us about yourself

I saw niche needs in the local economy and community. I wanted to make my daily work to help fill those needs in whatever ways I could. Helping connect people, not just for myself but for everyone in my city, state, country, and the world: that's what motivates me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The connections I've helped establish with people, their neighbors, and other cultures.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Doing everything from start to finish. I have a CPA who helps with my tax-related things and a person who runs my website, but other than that, I do pretty much everything myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn to balance your own goals with the needs of your market.
  2. The work you do is a means to what is most impactful for your clients and colleagues and how you made them feel.
  3. Be transparent and straightforward. Communication, especially with what your needs are, is very important. Also, I have found that people like the story behind how something came to be, so don't be shy about wearing your brain on your sleeve.
