Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jayne Havens, Owner and Founder of The Center for Pediatric Sleep Management, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Center for Pediatric Sleep Management (CPSM) is an online Sleep Consultant Certification Course. The course offers a comprehensive curriculum on sleep science and proven strategies for sleep-training infants and toddlers. Beyond the rich course materials, we offer mentorship, support, and education in entrepreneurship and business building, which provides our course graduates with the tools necessary to launch, grow, and scale their own sleep consulting businesses.

Professional sleep consultants bring much-needed rest and relief to families by using their knowledge and expertise to help parents get their children to sleep independently through the night. Certified sleep consultants are able to run their businesses 100% virtually and create their own schedules. Some CPSM graduates choose to use their sleep consultant training as a “side hustle” or hobby, while others run full-time sleep consulting practices with six-figure incomes.

Tell us about yourself

My journey into this field began when I was an overwhelmed new mom, struggling to get my son to sleep through the night. Desperate for answers, I dove into any resource I could find and spent hours upon hours researching sleep strategies. Over time, I applied everything I learned, first to my son and then, a few years later, to my daughter. I was able to successfully help my kids establish good sleep habits very early on, and my friends all took notice! They began asking me for help with sleep-training their children, and word of my “sleep expertise” spread quickly. Soon, I found that my guidance was in high demand, and I decided to get certified as a sleep consultant and start helping families professionally. I began Snooze Fest by Jayne Havens as a part-time hobby, and eventually, my business grew, and I was making a full-time income as a certified sleep consultant while still being a full-time stay-at-home mom.

I decided that I wanted to share my passion for helping families and my enthusiasm for entrepreneurship with others, and that’s when the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management was born! I took everything I’d learned, all of my research, and my years of experience and created the most complete and inclusive sleep consultant certification training available. I placed emphasis not only on teaching others the ins and outs of sleep consulting but also providing the tools and knowledge to build a small business from the ground up and be able to make a significant income while working from home. I am motivated every day as I watch other women and moms find success and support one another on their journeys toward financial freedom!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I first started in this business, I never intended for it to be anything more than a hobby while I stayed home with my two young kids. I was passionate about healthy and independent sleep hygiene for children and was just happy to have found a way to share that with other families while making a little extra spending money. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect my business to grow and evolve in the way that it has. The sense of accomplishment I felt when helping parents teach their babies healthy sleep habits has only been exceeded by the sense of pride I feel now, getting to teach and mentor other women as they build their own sleep consulting businesses. Watching my reach expand from just a small circle of friends seeking my advice, to helping thousands of families across the world, by supporting my students in their own businesses has been my most rewarding accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner has been managing my own confidence and mindset. When I was first starting out, I worried about everything! I worried about not being able to find clients or, even worse, what if I couldn’t help them once we started. The fear of failure was a definite roadblock for me. Ultimately, I had to remind myself that it was a journey and there would inevitably be bumps along the way, but focusing on keeping a positive outlook and remembering to have fun in the process, helped me to move past my fears and continue to grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take a chance on yourself! If you don’t try, you’ll never know what you’re capable of.
  2. Be mindful of why you’re starting your business and why you’re so passionate about what you do. If you let your “why” be what drives you, the money and success will follow!
  3. Be true to yourself! Show up authentically and focus on what makes you stand out instead of trying to compete or compare yourself to others. If you stay true to who you are and what you believe in, it won’t matter what anyone else is doing.
