What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a Virtual Holistic Nutrition business serving women who desire to use food and lifestyle as medicine to have a regular, pain-free period, naturally conceive, thrive with PCOS, and optimize their overall health and wellness.
Tell us about yourself
I became obsessed with health & wellness because of a personal struggle I was seeking to solve. For my entire life, I had an irregular period and was always told it was normal, so I never thought twice about it. It wasn't until I started experiencing monthly migraines, IBS (chronic bloating and constipation), body rashes, weight gain, and completely lost my period for two full years (all coming from undiagnosed and mismanaged PCOS) that I realized something was really wrong. I went to multiple doctors, getting blood tests and MRIs, and was always told everything was "normal" but to just take birth control or this steroid or migraine medication to "treat" the symptom. Deep down, I knew that wasn't going to solve the problem, so I began a personal research journey.
When I shifted my diet to a plant-based diet, I saw INCREDIBLE results and knew there was a connection between what I was eating and how I was feeling. That experience led me to go back to school (while full-time teaching) for Holistic Nutrition. I was a high school public school teacher for 9 years but was never really passionate about it. Once I healed myself and realized I had PCOS and that there were thousands of other women who were struggling with their hormones and also seeking a natural way to support themselves, I knew I wanted to create a business serving these women. Knowing that there are natural solutions for women to improve their health so they can FEEL better and stop unnecessarily struggling is what motivates me every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to help women get pregnant who were told they would never be able to conceive naturally. I would also say my biggest accomplishment is building a 6 figure business in the middle of a pandemic and resigning from my 9 years teaching career in August 2020.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is that you are responsible for it all. Yes, of course, there's a spiritual side where the Universe/God is there to support you, as well as any team members you hire, but at the end of the day, the success and trajectory of the business are largely up to you. Your energy, your ability to pivot, your resiliency, your vision, your leadership. It's the greatest personal development journey you could ever go on.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take ACTION. It's what gives you clarity. You don't need to see the whole picture. In fact, you will almost never be able to see the full picture. You just have to take the first step, and that will allow you to gain clarity on what to do next. Make decisions from a place where the business is going, not where it currently is today.
- Failure is PART of the process. It’s required to build your business. Embrace it; know it’s coming. Problem-solve, learn the lessons, take action on them and move on.
- Invest in yourself. Hire a mentor that you connect with that does business in the way you desire to do it and learn from them. You're not meant to do this alone. Get in a mastermind, go to events, and get around other entrepreneurs. It helps you feel not as much alone, it gives you support, helps you grow, and leads you to future connections.
