Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Angie Setzer, Co-Founder of Consus, located in Grand Ledge, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are agribusiness consultants. We work with farmers and other companies in the agriculture industry. Most specifically when it comes to marketing or trading physical grain.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the agriculture industry for almost 18 years and had been in a position prior to starting on my own that had been very entrepreneurial. I knew I needed a change, but I was unsure how to make that happen until I began working with my partner Boyd and saw how he was able to manage his business. Once we began working together, the vision for Consus became clear. Helping the farmer and doing my best to provide transparency to the industry are my biggest drivers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being relevant in the industry and having a voice we can use to make a difference.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Never feeling like you're done. There is always another project you could or should be working on, perhaps a follow-up email you forgot to send. It's definitely more of a mental load than anything I have done prior.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are willing to do the really hard stuff and work more than you may have before.
  2. Don't be afraid to talk to people before making the jump. Listen to both the good and the bad.
  3. Make sure you have a support group. Starting your own business can be very lonely; make sure you have peers and mentors you can lean on once you start.
