Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Belanger, CEO of ConsciousWorks Consulting Inc, located in Canmore, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I consult, research, write and speak on the skills, habits, and systems for proactive mental health and human performance. I work with companies and leaders to implement the latest research to create sustainable work environments, prevent burnout and have a little fun in the process.

Tell us about yourself

I am a recovering academic, receiving my Ph.D. and EMBA and realizing what we know about mental health, the workplace, and how to strategically unwork is not being implemented. I saw an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people's lives by giving them the tools to thrive even in the most stressful, complex times. I remain motivated by the stories of people being able to implement the tools and dive deeper into work and life. I am also always playing researcher with my own skills, habits, and work design - how the research is implemented in real-life situations with owning a business, two small children, life stressors, and always having to adapt to the realities and complexities of day-to-day life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been able to work with some of the most incredible companies and leaders- creating impactful keynotes, continuing education, and system-wide changes. The opportunities that stick out to me are redesigning a school district wellness program and burnout training for physicians. I have also had the unique privilege to interview and speak in front of world leaders as we think through what we can do to be more proactive with mental health.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It can be a lonely road, and when 'life happens,' you still must pull up your socks and keep going. Learning to unwork, get deep rest and be fully present with outside work activities is a challenge for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create an incredible community of people around you. Other business owners, friendships, spouses, and your team.
  2. Dedicate yourself to practices that allow you to perform at your best (exercise, meditation, connection, etc.)
  3. Learn to have hard conversations. Embrace them.
