Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in interior design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marion Lavesque, Founder of Conscious Interior Design, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Conscious Interior Design is an Interior Design studio based in San Francisco. I aim to create functional, joyful, and clean design because I believe you can live a more conscious life in a place with no clutter, that triggers the right feelings, and that limits the use of chemicals. My clients are mostly families who like my pragmatic approach, joyful style, and safe sourcing. I also work for stores or restaurants as my background is in Visual Merchandising.

Tell us about yourself

I have been living abroad in Europe, Asia, and the US for more than 15 years, and had different jobs in marketing, visual merchandising, and design. Whichever the industry, what I loved the more was using colors and shapes to create an impact on people. And this is what motivates me every day: improve my clients' everyday life by providing a space that works for them and make them feel better. I really believe that my works improve how people feel, and this is what matters most.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having created a sustainable business in 2 years, managing a family and work-life balance. I decided to open my own studio to have the flexibility to also fetch my kids at school, and yes, it implies working later in the evening, but the time spent with them is worth it!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Working solo is the most challenging for the outgoing person I am. Creativity cannot come while sitting at your desk alone all day long. So I had to accept to make space for other activities that nourish me. Learning to ask for help, always. I had to really jump out of my comfort zone so many times on that part. And, of course, multitasking and accepting to do my accounting when I just want to design!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Send away the imposter syndrome right now: you need to value your worth well to create a sustainable business from the beginning.
  2. Get help: from friends or from your network. Meet people and exchange your issues.
  3. Make sure your business is aligned with your values. This will give you the energy to wake up in the morning and get things done well.
