Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Forest Konefal, Owner of Concord Pilates, located in Concord, NH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a Pilates studio that specializes in handling people who have physical difficulties, for example, people who have just left physical therapy or have MS or Osteoporosis, as well as people who just want to get fit.

Tell us about yourself

I got started in Pilates because I have a neck and back problem, and Pilates was recommended to me as a safe way to exercise and rebuild my health. I like helping people with their physical problems and seeing their success in reaching their fitness goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving the pandemic, we lost most of our clients and several of our staff. Our revenue plummeted 80% in a year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing employees who have bigger priorities than working. Several of my employees are quite willing to take the day off from work to go out for lunch with friends, which is infuriating at times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't expect to make money for several years.
  2. Find a good partner who actually cares for the business.
  3. Plan to handle most problems by yourself instead of your staff handling them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We are a small business attempting to rebuild after the pandemic. We have a loyal base of customers, never had any negative reviews, and in general, we just need more reach to potential clients more than anything.
