Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brett Vengroff, Principal Consultant at ComplianceLogix, located in Saint Petersburg, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

ComplianceLogix is a consultancy that provides regulatory compliance training and support for biotechnology companies developing innovative and life-saving therapeutics.

Tell us about yourself

I have over twenty-six years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry consulting for both Sponsors and Contract Research Organizations. It is exciting to work with innovative teams working with cutting-edge technology to manufacture products and conduct clinical trials worldwide.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been the ability to build a strong network of experienced consultants across the globe. I rely on their experience and expertise to accomplish projects for our clients that I would not be able to do alone.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The greatest challenge when first starting out was to say "no" to a particular project. It felt counterintuitive to turn away business even if I was already supporting a full workload. Having support from my colleagues has allowed me time to focus on the areas of running the business that I am best suited for.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get started - Your product or service may not be perfect yet, but it will not be until you get experience and test it in the real world. Start with a tangible target market in which you can compete and excel. Don't try to be everything to everyone.
  2. Get help - Recognize that you are not an expert in all areas of running your business. Get the help you need so that you are able to focus on the areas of your business in which you can excel.
  3. Reassess - Keep an eye on progress towards your goals, as well as your competitors. Periodic evaluation of your business will help keep you on course with the ability to adapt to changes in your target market.
