Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Hendricks, Founder of Completely Fresh Productions, located in San Jose, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Completely Fresh Productions specializes in post-production editing (video + audio) as well as podcast production. We will also be adding web design services in the future.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked with audio (and some video) for many years, and when a friend referred me to a local PR agency that needed a freelance post-production editor, I jumped at the opportunity. This work helped me grow several skill sets, and I soon became motivated to reach out to my own clients. Combining my passions for technology and creative arts while helping clients promote impactful ideas to effect positive change is what drives me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment thus far is knowing that the editing work I do on a monthly basis for Health2047's podcast, "So You Want to Transform Healthcare," is inspiring so many medical professionals and future entrepreneurs to re-imagine the future of healthcare.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As I do most of my Completely Fresh work part-time (I also work full-time in educational technology), one of the biggest challenges is having the bandwidth and momentum to do the additional outreach and financial work, as I currently do not have any other employees.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust the process. Give yourself the time and space you need to learn and master the primary skills you need to start and run your business. It's not a race!
  2. Allow for mistakes. Let yourself "fail forward." Mistakes and misunderstandings will happen. Learn how to avoid these mistakes going forward and grow stronger from experience!
  3. Be a great communicator. In my experience, clients will be overall happier with your services when you prioritize timeliness, authenticity, and clarity in your emails and phone calls. Be transparent when you need to, and honor the timeframe that is needed for the project. It's really important to ensure that the client feels like part of the process and that they can trust your expertise.
