Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gaylene Gomez, founder of Compass Rose Nutrition and Wellness, located in Alberta, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help busy, professional women transform their health, have more energy, vitality, and lose unwanted weight by nourishing their bodies with the power of food and simple lifestyle changes. Using holistic approaches, I help my clients prioritize their four pillars of health so they can create balance and feel supported by a strong foundation.

My online coaching programs are available to women who want to get off the diet roller coaster and set themselves up for success with lasting healthy habits.

Tell us about yourself

After many years of low energy, acne, under-eating, headaches, and poor health, I finally had enough. I decided to take charge of my health. Studying to become a Certified Holistic Nutrition Consultant was an obvious next step for me, as my background included other health training- and I was working as a Registered Massage Therapist.

However, the one key thing missing in my health routine was Nutrition. Including this certification filled a huge gap for me and totally changed my life and my health. Now, I share my knowledge and experience with other women, so they don't have to suffer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating my community of thousands of amazing women- many of whom reach out to me regularly with their personal health wins. I'm so proud of women who decide to put themselves first and take charge of their own health- because if we don't do it for ourselves, who else can we expect to do it?

As a business owner- hearing words like - "Thank you, you changed my life" is the reason I will stay in this career for many years to come.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things as a business owner is creating space in my day for everyone who needs help. So many women are struggling with their health, and I wish I could help everyone! But having clear boundaries to maintain my own energy and health has been important for me both personally and professionally. I have to take good care of myself so that I can be there for the clients that need me. Luckily, I now have online group programs where I can support many people all at once, in addition to my more personalized programs.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get support- it's a big task to get everything up and running, and it's easy to think we can do it alone. But getting coaching, support, and building a team have been key to my success and sanity. Had I known how much work it would be, I would have gotten that support even sooner.
  2. Get uncomfortable- Learning new programs, trying new things, getting in front of strangers, putting yourself out there can feel uncomfortable. But I can't run an online coaching business hiding behind my computer alone, so putting myself out there and getting uncomfortable has been a big piece of the puzzle. Failures happen in business, so getting comfortable with hard things is important to be able to do.
  3. Get going- we can try to be a perfectionist in everything we do, but then it will take forever, or maybe never happen. So refer back to #2 and get uncomfortable by putting things out to the world even if they are not perfect. Getting going is more important than getting it perfect.
