Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emma Lomax, Owner of Communication Kids, located in Milton, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Communication Kids is Milton's newest speech, language, and literacy centre dedicated to providing child-centered, neurodiversity-affirming services. We welcome all ages but specialize in working with children aged 18 months to 18 years.

Tell us about yourself

I recently completed my Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology and have since continued to develop my skills through additional courses. After working in the field for over a year, I made the decision to start my own practice. A driving force of this decision was the overwhelming market need for more private speech and language services and the desire to own and operate my own company. The nature of this line of work is incredibly rewarding, as I am able to make a lasting impact and improve the quality of life for children of all ages.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to open my own practice before the age of thirty has been both exciting and challenging.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the more challenging aspects of being a business owner is balancing the unique needs of employees and clients. In addition, for a new business, establishing our brand and reputation within the community requires significant time and effort.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three important tips to keep in mind are: do your market research ahead of time to ensure there is enough demand for the product or service you are trying to provide, find something that makes your business stand apart from the competition, and make sure you have a strong financial plan before opening.
