Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaime Hunter, Founder of Common Moms, located in Waterdown, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are redefining Mat/Pat leave, making memories, and empowering parents while providing fun and exciting programming and events to support the development of children and enhance the overall health of parents. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers, Common Moms, is the place for you.

Tell us about yourself

After struggling with postpartum depression and anxiety on my first mat leave, I started Common Moms with the hopes of helping other moms to get social, have fun, and find support from their peers. This passion project started in my living room. I am proud to say we have created a community for Moms to gather and feel safe.

Rebecca joined me on this exciting journey at the end of 2016. Her prenatal and postpartum struggles made finding my mom's village so important, and I am not sure what I would have done without the wonderful mom friends I made while on mat leave. I am grateful every day that I am able to support other moms on this mothering journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Together we have taken this little group gathering in my living room to now. We proudly say we operate this business in 6 different cities, and we are excited to expand more in the coming years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The constant emotional ups and downs, sometimes these emotions switch within an hour!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If this is your passion and you want to chase your dream, jump in with two feet. You will land on a foundation fueled with drive and excitement that will show through everything you do.
  2. Show up each and every day, even when you don't feel like it. Think of one small thing you can do to grow your business; the little things will add up.
  3. Don't give up. When things feel tough, they probably are, but that's okay because it will get better if you stick to it. Building a business takes time; don't let a small setback stop you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I don't think either of us could do this without one another. Having a partner through this ride is invaluable; we count on each other, keep each other accountable, and when one of us is down, the other one can pull us up.
