Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nell Bostwick, founder of ComeUnityPDX, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a purpose-driven business focused on spreading pride and good vibes to the neighborhoods of Portland. We are a space to come together for art, shopping, and working for the benefit of the community. Shopping with us betters our neighborhoods by giving back locally.

Love for our community and wanting to say it loud is what we are all about. Standing up for positivity and change is our jam too. Our neighborhood-centric retail shop has gear that helps foster a stronger sense of community and pride. All of our gear is designed and printed here in PDX. The majority of our styles benefit Oregon Food Bank. Learn more about why we give back.

With our Local art shop, Art should be fun and invoke an emotional feeling. With our Artist in House, we have gathered local artists of all kinds, creating a space that is approachable for the whole family, so you can enjoy their talents and be inspired.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a corporate refugee. After 25 years in corporate retail as a director of merchandising and creative services, I felt very unsatisfied and felt that I should be doing more for my community. ComeUnityPDX was created from a need to bring people together, have some fun and give back in the process. My neighbors and my family motivate me, especially being a mom to 2 girls. I want them to see that they can do anything, even at 49!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Well, surviving in today's economy is a huge accomplishment. Starting a business and opening up a shop in 2020 has been big...let's just say that. I have survived.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is being alone in decision-making. I do miss having a team to work together with. But I have found that my customers are becoming my team!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Just start! Don't overthink it, but make sure you have something to say, and you can stand behind it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Support small businesses, especially women in business!!!
