Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Fletcher Huelsemann, Commissioner of Cometderby of Wisconsin, located in Madison, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Cometderby of Wisconsin is a league hub for the sport of Cometderby. Our customers are the fans who watch our games and buy merchandise.

Tell us about yourself

I started Cometderby when I was still in high school. I started playing it with friends and slowly made up rules for the game until I developed it into a full-fledged sport. The fact that there are people eager to play Cometderby motivates me to bring the game to more and more people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

While this sport is still growing, and the league is still in its infancy, I still have a long way to go before people are able to tune into "Friday Night Cometderby on ESPN." Before I make it big with network deals and big-name sponsorships, I have to host demonstrations with my old high school. I am talking with the Athletic Director and the city's Parks and Rec. Department about hosting a scrimmage and, hopefully, the first-ever sanctioned Cometderby league in the near future.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When it comes to running a sports league, starting from nothing
to grow our roster of players and viewer base can feel almost impossible. You just have to keep at it, don't ever give up. Especially when you work at other jobs, creating a balance between growing your business and your other personal duties can be a challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you work during the day and can't send emails while you're away,
write all your emails at night and schedule them to be sent the next morning. That way, if you need to add to those emails later that night, you can go back to edit them and schedule them again without sending multiple emails.
  2. If you need to keep your personal phone number separate from your business phone number, download a free text app and add minutes to it as needed. Many times they offer specials to allow you to save money while being about to have a new phone number.
  3. If you're just starting a new business and don't have the available funds to buy a website and domain, you can shorten the long URL's from free websites using any URL shortening site like bitly.com.This also allows you to have a little more customization without spending money on premium websites.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running a business is a huge risk, and growing your network can be a grueling task. Keep your head up, keep trying, and you might make it big one day. If you're in my area or are willing to travel, I am happy to host demonstrations for you and your friends in Madison, WI.
