Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Redois, Co-owner of The Rocky Bean Co, located in Exshaw, Alberta, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We make coffee in a van. Now not just specialty coffee and unique flavors, we also offer homemade baked goods with GF options. We work with as many local businesses as possible - local roaster, local tea shop, local merch supplier, and it's not just a van; it's a 77 VW with an original engine. We operate in the Bow Valley (Banff, Canmore) at farmers markets, music, sports events, festivals, and private events for whoever likes a good capp or mocha with a smile, whether long time local or tourists.

Tell us about yourself

Flexibility. Creativity. Being able to be your own boss, to do what I want to do, with all the pros and cons. Returning customers and smiles on their faces are what keep me going!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to live from my business and being able to afford to pay employees well. It took some time, but finally, there.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's a 24-7 job. With all the behind-the-scenes work, the constant learning to get better, decision-making is sometimes hard to save time for yourself and the fam, but not impossible.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

This is the number 1 thing I get asked ''So cool, I wanna do what you do, what should I do..'' Well, do some research first before asking for help. Nobody will do it for you. of course you can't know it all, but don't expect others to do your job. Alra hours, don't be afraid to do extra hours at first, and remember what people see in your business is yourself. Be organized, clean, and don't hesitate to go the extra mile for them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

You'll never know if you don't try.
