Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eric Jones, Founder of Coffee Cup Coaching, located in Cumming, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Coffee Cup Coaching is a coaching company focused on helping people to discover their passions and pursue their lives with purpose. We offer 1-on-1 coaching to individuals who are looking to make transitions in their life, career, and even relationships. Our customers range from those just entering the workforce who want validation on their chosen career path or are looking to make some good first steps.

We also work with mid-career professionals who are looking to transition in their career, industry, or role, along with those who want to enhance their current career goals and objectives. Finally, we work with anyone who just wants to have a better understanding of who they are and how they operate and want to engage better with the world around them.

Tell us about yourself

I've been coaching informally for the better part of the past 15 years. Having done solo coaching with people who wanted to better understand themselves using personality tests to pre-marital coaching with my wife during the early years of our marriage. Coaching is what fuels me and was the catalyst for the brand. When asked where I want to spend my time, it's always been "in a coffee shop helping people reach their dreams." My clients motivate me daily as they show up to sessions to work on being better. I'm encouraged to keep learning and growing so I can help them achieve all that they want out of life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting! So many people talk about starting but never take those first steps. Yes, they are difficult and hard and push me out of my comfort zone daily, but I'm doing it. Also, finding a network of people who can fill in the gaps where I'm weak while also providing me with my own support and coaching has been truly life-changing. Anyone out there who wants to be successful should find those who can help lift them up when they feel they can't go on.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Marketing, of course! The idea of keeping your name out there and fresh on people's minds so when the needs arrive which you can meet, they think of you. It's also finding that balance between creating good marketing but also growing a community of people whom you can experiment with and learn and grow from.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start even if it's small or part-time or feels like no one cares. You have to keep going, and in time you will grow bigger, go full-time (if that's your goal), and find lots of people who do care.
  2. Don't try and do it all yourself. Find people, services, or tools that can help to lighten the load.
  3. Don't be afraid to try something new. You have to figure out what your risk tolerance is and then run right up to and constantly inspect and adapt to it.
