What's your business, and who are your customers?
At our Aboriginal Living Skills School, we teach modern outdoor survival skills, primitive living skills, bushcraft, and urban preparedness. Our students come from all over the world and are from every age group. One of the core motivations for people to enroll in our courses is to become more self-reliant and confident in their lives.
Tell us about yourself
I have always been passionate about doing more with less. The motto for my survival school is “the more you know, the less you need.” Learning about complex environments, from the wilderness to urban areas, and what can be done to support life during emergency scenarios is a high apex yet disappearing skill set. Nothing is more rewarding than getting an email that you have taught someone a skill that has saved their life in the outdoors.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In today’s business environment, perhaps our biggest success story is that we have taught survival skills at our school for 31 years and counting.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Currently, one of our biggest challenges is navigating the over-saturation of the survival skills market due to so-called “survival experts” spawned from phony TV survival shows. Even though a survival instructor deals directly with a student’s safety, most people do not understand how to vet their instructor properly. Thus, the illusion of the phony survival expert can take precedence.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Be honest, be very good at what you do, and be willing to work your butt off and not give up.
