Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nathalie Maggio, Owner of Coastal Therapy & Wellness, located in Manhattan Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Coastal Therapy and Wellness is a psychotherapy practice that supports millennials and teenagers in overcoming trauma, anxiety, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties. We offer in-person sessions in Manhattan Beach and Seal Beach and virtual sessions throughout the state of California. Our approach is evidence-based, modern, and tailored to each client’s individual situation.

We integrate modern technology to track clients' progress and feedback to maximize treatment effectiveness and outcomes. We help our clients feel more in control, work through what's holding them back from their goals, feel like their authentic selves, and achieve healthier relationships with themselves and their loved ones. In short, we help them increase their overall well-being and live life to the fullest.

Tell us about yourself

What truly motivated me the most was seeing my clients grow. I know this sounds so cheesy, but being able to support someone through their struggles and observing them feel better and achieve their goals is absolutely magical. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to do this work. What got me into starting and growing my own private practice was my drive to deliver the best possible treatment for my clients. I value the trust clients put in me, and my goal has always been to show up as my best self in order to be fully present and effective. My clients deserve nothing less than that.

Along the way, I found a passion for business and noticed that many of my colleagues were struggling with burnout due to less-than-optimal work conditions.
The most rewarding aspect of my job is to see my clients grow. This may sound cheesy, but being able to support someone through their struggles and observe them improve and achieve their goals is absolutely magical. I value the trust my clients put in me, and my goal has always been to show up as my best self, to be fully present, and to help my clients improve and progress with each therapy session. My clients deserve nothing less than that. As my professional journey progressed, I developed a passion for the business aspect of psychotherapy practices and noticed that many of my colleagues were struggling with burnout due to less-than-optimal work conditions. I felt that starting my own practice was the best thing for me, my associates, and my clients.

My mission as a group practice owner and CEO is to provide a work environment in which therapists’ mental well-being can flourish for they to serve their clients in the best way possible. As a society, we cannot afford to burn out another therapist.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This is a tough question to answer, but I would say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is a positive impact that Coastal Therapy & Wellness has had on the lives of our clients. Growing the business to a sustainable point which allows us to keep showing up and serving exciting and new clients, is the biggest achievement of all.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The biggest challenge for me as a business owner has been adjusting to the changes that come along with growth and learning to delegate certain tasks to members of my team. When I first opened my practice, I was the one who wore all the hats. I loved being in tune with all aspects of the business and the clients I worked with.

However, as I’ve been growing this business, there is just too much for me to handle alone. Although this can still be challenging at times, I keep my focus on the bigger picture and the mission of my business and know that the changes I make will ultimately help serve our clients best.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear idea of your mission and values. You will experience many distractions along the way, and a mission will help you stay motivated and clear on your goals and values and will guide you along the way to build a business that truly works for you.
  2. Don’t do it alone! Being in business can be very isolating. Thankfully there are many others out there in the same position or a few steps ahead of you who are more than willing to connect, support, and share their wisdom.
  3. Get out of your comfort zone often. Trust yourself and press forward even when things seem scary or intimidating. It’s easy to think that when someone experiences success that they “had it all figured out” or never second-guessed themselves as they started their business. However, as I have grown my practice and networked with others in my field, it is clear that many others have shared similar experiences. I think what helped me the most was continually reminding myself that feelings of fear and nervousness do not mean that something is a bad idea. I have been able to reframe my outlook and now view failure as an opportunity to learn and grow.
