Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Minda Miloff, Founder of Coach Minda, located in Montreal, QC, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I coach professionals and business people in all facets of work and life. I work hard to help people feel good about who they are and provide support and guidance on how to achieve what they want. I tend to attract smart folks who have tendencies towards perfectionism, procrastination, and self-doubt. I help my clients experience some quick wins and work through roadblocks and stay motivated.

Tell us about yourself

For over 20 years, I worked as an instructional designer, trainer, and training project manager. I had no idea that when I changed my career almost ten years ago to become a coach, how meaningful and important this work would be to me and to those I coach. I meet wonderful people who try hard to improve their lives and feel happier and more satisfied. Their stories are all our stories, and I am motivated to listen and be of service in the best way I can.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Most of my working life has been as a solo business operator. I don't have a single accomplishment, but I am proud of how I have handled myself over the years - with integrity, honesty, and a desire to go the extra mile. I have dealt well with the uncertainty and risk of being in business and dealing with "lean" times. As a solo entrepreneur, you need to trust people even though you don't know them and always adapt to different organizational cultures and people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In lean times your identity can take a beating. You can lose faith in what you are doing and whether you are any good at what you do. Knowing when to cut your losses is hard. There may come a time when you need to change your course of action. Staying positive and working through difficult times is hard but very rewarding when you come out the other end grateful and satisfied you stayed the course.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have talked to other people in your line of work and have a good assessment of some of the challenges and risks.
  2. Have a good solid plan when you start out - even though the plan is bound to change.
  3. Work steadily.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I feel everyone can benefit from working with a coach. You tend to handle stress much better and feel happier and more light-hearted when you:
1. Make decisions with more confidence and ease
2. Unravel time management tangles and boost personal productivity
3. Get on top of commitments, projects, and plans
4. Confront the demons of self-doubt and procrastination
5. Develop insights and skills to deal with a tough job, a difficult relationship, or a health issue
