Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carrolee M Moore, CEO of CMC Marketing Company, located in McKinney, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

CMC Marketing Co is a branding and marketing agency that services businesses that are bursting at the seams with potential but lack clarity of message. Our services - brand design (that focuses on clarifying brand messaging and positioning), web design and development along with organic social media marketing - help our clients cut through the noise of competition, increase market share, and position their business or brand as a go-to in their industries.

Tell us about yourself

I am a reformed Jill-of-all-trades. My career is a masterclass of how to recreate yourself in order to transition between industries and even sectors. By the age of 30, I had transitioned between health care, tech, higher education, publishing, and nonprofit work.

I took my love for people, branding, and a good story and made it into a thriving freelancing business. It wasn't until I was laid off in early 2020 that I decided to leave the corporate work structure behind and start my own thing. It would take another year for me to formalize the company as it is now.

I am motivated every day by my love for helping people grow. Whether that is gaining new clients or customers or growing in their faith, or growing in their purpose - that is always my goal.

As a business owner, preacher, and business coach - I am always interested in the "good" stories. The ones that make an impact, whether the provision is tangible or spiritual.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is leading our team to a record year of growth in 2022, where we more than doubled our YOY revenue.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is hiring and retaining great talent. Our team is stacked with amazing creatives, but it has not been easy getting here.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips or advice I would give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business are:

  1. Work on cultivating a positive, abundance-focused, and determined mindset.
  2. Get your people, both a group of other newbie entrepreneurs as well as more seasoned mentors. You'll need folks to be vulnerable with and others who can help coach you out of or into situations.
  3. Read/listen/watch things that are geared toward personal and professional development and improvement. 3b would be practicing gratitude.
