Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in biosecurity but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mark Cottone, owner and founder of Clean Beam LLC, located in Saint Charles, Illinois.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Clean Beam is a biosecurity company that focusses on active pathogenic control for the food and beverage and healthcare industries. Using Pulsed Ultraviolet light we deactivate bacteria, viruses and mold that otherwise cause significant illness and death. Pulsed UV is a more intense form of light that works in just a few seconds. We have proven it to be more effective than other available treatments.

Tell us about yourself

I started in the packaging business years ago that evolved to packaging that extended the shelf life of fresh foods. I became interested in PUV as a means of sanitizing both the packaging and the food itself. I am motivated by solving critical societal problems using my engineering and design skills. I like working (listening) to my clients to understand how they experience these problems and how they would need a solution to work in their environment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Although I have started a number of business, I think establishing Clean Beam is my biggest accomplishment. This company has as its purpose to safely eradicate pathogens for improved health.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is never enough resource (time, money, people) to do everything you want to do. Keeping the few key things always in focus and not letting too many shiny objects detract you, is important.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Do something you love.

2. Stay the course - persevere.

3. Pick people you trust.

Anything else you'd like to share?

The businesses that I've started have been most successful when we really listen and learn from our clients. Our best and longest relationships are where we listen to them, learn with them and stay till they are completely satisfied.
