Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Clara Luo, owner of King Edward Florist, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family-owned flower shop where we specialize in flower design for all occasions: weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. Our customers are the local community and neighborhoods.

Tell us about yourself

My family motivates me each day to do what I do. I took over this flower shop about 12 years ago (the shop has been at this location for more than 20 years!), and as a mother and a daughter, I must provide food for my family at the time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Operating a flower shop has always been a struggle for me as English is not my first language, and it was very challenging for me to communicate with suppliers and customers. I pushed myself to study and learn English every night after work, and I pushed myself to communicate with suppliers and customers with my poor English. After a few years, I was able to establish a professional and client relationship with them. And I was lucky enough that my daughter comes to help out every now and then and on big holidays. The biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to be able to run the business independently and smoothly. And also knowing that your family and local community are always there to support you.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

A business owner wears many hats in their business. One of the hardest things about being a business owner is being able to manage and coordinate your business. You need to set a clear goal for yourself. You need to identify the obstacles and find a solution to overcome obstacles. Lastly, learn from mistakes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a passion for what you do.
  2. Always look for ways to improve and develop.
  3. Be creative.
