Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joshua Morris, Director of Circus Uncertainty, located in Bristol, Avon, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a circus entertainment agency based in Bristol but operating around the UK, including London. Offering circus acts for hire to corporate events, weddings, council event entertainment, and more.

Tell us about yourself

I first started as an actor, then went on to study for a degree in circus at Circomedia. Circus very quickly took over my life, and coupled with what I had learned about running a small company from my dad Circus Uncertainty was born. I come from a working-class town in North Barnsley, so the entertainment industry wasn't a big thing where I was from. I guess this gave me a passion to do something a little outside the norm. What makes me get up in the morning each day is knowing that what I do, whether on stage or off stage, brings a smile to people's faces.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

At the age of only 21, I went toe to toe with a face-to-face pitch with one of the biggest agencies in Europe. We ended up bringing over 40 performers to that event. I tend to think of this as my biggest accomplishment because it's when I stepped from small-time gigs to the big league.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I guess knowing that you can't really take time off is the hardest thing as a business owner. The world of circus performance can be unpredictable at times. And when things go south, you have to be ready to fix it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build your circus (Circle) of trusted, intelligent people around you. You always want to be the dumbest person in your room.
  2. Take the leap and do things differently; that's where true innovation happens.
  3. An old acting technique, but I think it applies to business when you think about it - If you rehearse and practice enough, then when it comes to the show, everything will be second nature, and you can enjoy the moment.
