Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cindy Spratt, a holistic nutritionist based in Ymir, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Holistic Nutritionist specializing in Culinary Nutrition and Dysfunctional Eating Recovery. I work with women looking to transform their relationship with food and live their most thriving life in a sustainable way.

Tell us about yourself

I began my journey with nutrition after a cancer diagnosis in 2010. While I had always had a deep interest in food and health, my own health crisis is what threw me down a path to personal wellness and then into a life where I could share everything I had learned with others. I am motivated day after day by all the incredible people out there who are willing to work hard to instill permanent, positive changes in their lives and diets to improve their overall health and quality of life. I am also deeply motivated by the progress that I see in my clients and am continuously humbled by their courage and ability to show up for themselves time and time again.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a thriving client practice, a beautiful website, and a steady stream of in-person and online classes.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It can often feel lonely. Because I live rurally, I find this particularly hard and struggle to network and collaborate the way I would be able to in a larger city.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your homework - watch what others are doing, take a business course, ask for help with the things you are still learning, and always be on the lookout for ways to improve.
  2. Be true to yourself. It is your authenticity, your uniqueness, and your passion that will enable you to succeed. The answer to success is not ever in a program that promises to make you wealthy, it is in staying true to who you are, your morals, your truths, and your story. Be careful not to lose sight of this along the way.
  3. Be patient. Building a successful business or practice is not instant. It takes time, and it's a steep learning curve. Be patient with yourself, ask for help when needed, and go at a pace that is comfortable versus overwhelming.
