Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cindy Jesse, Owner of Cindy Jesse Life Coaching and Therapy, located in Cincinnati, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is therapy for empowering women who want to heal their anxiety, depression, past trauma, and narcissistic abuse, as well as coaching women to gain the confidence to start their own businesses.

Tell us about yourself

I am a wife, mother, author, therapist, and business coach. I was 29 years old when I decided I was tired of feeling miserable and called a therapist. I worked at healing my own trauma, my own anxiety, my own lack of confidence, and my own low self-worth (which was a result of shame). A few years later, my children were all in middle or high school, and I decided that my life had been enhanced so much by therapy that my burning passion was to help other women become whole and healthy and love their lives! I went to school and worked in behavior units for a few years.

I later started my own therapy practice and found that I had business acumen, so I began enjoying helping my clients become entrepreneurs. Another passion is writing, so I wrote and published my book. I am very motivated by the healing and changes I see in my clients and that they tell me they experience. I am also motivated by the fact that people who are victims or survivors of trauma can heal and live as amazing a life as people who have not experienced trauma, and I want to get that hope out there! Finally, I am an empathic ambivert who loves being a solo entrepreneur.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishments as a business owner would have been clients that did the work, came back to do more work as needed, and referred their friends and family! That tells me that my hard work is paying off for them and for me.

I would add writing my book and having clients and potential clients tell me how much my story helped them realize they needed to do some personal work and gave them the hope to grow, evolve, and become thriving survivors! Clients and readers definitely tell me they take their power back from past abusers, which translates to taking their lives back, which is so powerful.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Taxes, accountants, stuff I don't enjoy LOL—besides that once-a-year pain in the a**, there's nothing too hard at all! It's the best thing I ever did for myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your passion—only do a business. It's your passion because social media work is non-stop, LOL.
Media, in addition to word of mouth, is today's marketing tool.
  2. Be professional but also authentic and ethical, and treat clients as you would appreciate being treated—because it matters.
  3. Start scared. If you wait until you don't feel like an imposter or a fraud as a new business owner, you won't do it. Tell yourself: next year will be here whether or not I start my business. When next year comes, what will I most wish I had done? That one thing got me through the doubting. The only people who don't have at least a little anxiety or trepidation when starting their business are psychopaths, LOL.
