What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a business management consultant and coach. My clients are small-volume builders, remodelers, and trade contractors. I am also a certified construction mediator-arbitrator working with attorneys on construction-related lawsuits. I am also a licensed provider of National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) education courses.
Tell us about yourself
I began my construction career in 1968 as an apprentice carpenter. After retiring from actively building and remodeling, I started my consulting business in 2017. I had survived several market downturns and watched my fellow builders and remodelers fail and lose everything. I had researched and found that small businesses in the construction industry have the second highest failure rate of all industries and that the primary reason was a lack of a working business plan and poor management. Only about 12% had business plans. So I wrote the book Plan To Profit: Business Planning for Builders and Remodelers and made it my mission to increase the survival rate of small construction businesses. As for what motivates me, as noted on my Facebook page and my website, my guiding principle is Zig Ziglar's quote, "You can have everything you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want out of life."
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have been recognized nationally as a leader in the residential construction industry.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Work-Life Balance.

Have a working business plan that you review and update regularly.
